Mary Potter (1900-1981)

Born in Kent, Mary Potter studied at Beckenham School of Art in 1916 and at the Slade School of Fine Art (1918-1921), was awarded the first prize for portrait painting and a place in a New English Art Club exhibition and became an early member of the London Group. She exhibited widely and had her first solo exhibition at the Bloomsbury Gallery in 1931. She went on to exhibit regularly at Tooth’s, the Leicester Galleries and the New Art Centre.

Mary Potter moved to Aldeburgh in 1951 and worked from a purpose built house and studio from 1963.

In 1964, she had a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. She exhibited at the Tate Gallery in 1980, and in 1981,  an exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery featured 98 of her paintings spanning her career since 1922.

Her work is held in many national collections, including Tate Britain, Arts Council England, the Government Art Collection and at The Red House.
